I first met Bradley students as a doula. Whenever someone says they take Bradley Method® classes, I am excited. Bradley students always seem so well prepared, but especially, it's the dads who impress me the most. They are very "with it"- so kind and helpful to the laboring mother.
I had an opportunity to attend a Bradley class as a visitor, and from the moment I stepped into class, I knew that this was for me. I became an educator in 2010. The Bradley Method® classes are for couples, and geared toward achieving a natural childbirth, whether in hospital, birth center, or home birth. In this twelve week class, we will look at exercise, and nutrition, pregnancy, labor and birth, as well as breastfeeding and baby care. The class covers all aspects of pregnancy with time to learn and practice in a small class atmosphere.

Christian Robert Nemeth - Bradley baby, home birth
I spent most of my hard labor in the tub, which was also where I was planning to deliver. The water was amazing and the fire and home atmosphere made things really calm and easier to focus. My midwife and team all stayed back and let us do our thing and my mom snapped occasional photos from the back of the room. The whole time I kept telling myself that it wasn't that bad and it was only going to get worse so get ready for the long haul. I had decided in my mind that I would be in labor til the next night and not to get overconfident. Ha ha. I "transitioned" with some fun throwing up and a feeling of complete exhaustion. Eventually around 6AM my midwife suggested that I get out and try a while on the bed to change things up and give me a chance to rest. I had 3 intense contractions on my way from the tub to my bed.
By the time we were at this point in labor I felt as though my body was pushing and I had nothing to do with it. ( i really thought I would be the one controlling the pushing!) When I got to the bed Goldie had me lay in a side position and scissored my legs propped with pillows. I had another intense contraction and wanted to know if i could go back to the water. She told me yes, but then his head started to crown and we realized I wasn't going anywhere! At the next contraction I was "pushing" and she told me to stop so i dont tear and I said "I CANT!" and i remember Jesse jumping into my face and saying " Babe, you have to stop or you are going to tear!" so i focused as much as possible and literally tried to freeze my body. The entire moment I was thinking, i can't i can't I am tearing! at this point his head slowly went back in an goldie held me with warm towels as the head slowly came back out...apparently I COULD stop! Then all of a sudden on the next push the head came out and the cord was wrapped around the neck, along with a little hand. Goldie carefully released the hand and then had me push one more time to get out the shoulders and body. (I had no idea about any of this at this point, I just remember, Don't push > ok push out the shoulders > you did it. )
So,although I didn't ever make it back to the tub, I think it was blessing because Goldie was able to prevent me from tearing and was able to deal with the cord and hand being an unknown obstacle she may not have seen while I was in the water. Within a minute, he was delivered and Jesse tearfully said "this is our baby Christian Robert", and then I said "it's a boy?!" Ha ha.. ( clearly delusional at this point!) He was then placed on my chest and latching on right away. I laid on the bed waiting to deliver the placenta, but nothing was happening. So then she had Jesse cut the cord and she did his measurements (5lbs 8oz/19in a tiny little thing!) She then quickly determined his blood type was the same as mine A-, which was a nice surprise since we had had so many issues with the rhogam shot controversy at ALL of my appointments both in PA and MI. Still not having delivered the placenta, she then had me go to the bathroom and squatting on the toilet for a better angle. She had made a cool contraption to catch it in the toilet- with one push it popped right out! Very strange feeling. Then Christian and I took an herbal bath to help both his cord and me heal. He loved it! ( we took this bath for the next 3 days)
